Hollow Threat Gundam-Bot W.I.P

Hollow Threat Gundam-Bot, short for “Hollow Threat Gundam – Mobile Suit Sketchbot”, can the name get any longer?! :P

This is my custom Sketchbot for an upcoming show at Munky King LA! In this custom robot, i’m trying to bring in my personal flavors, some memory from childhood, and new influences today! grow up watching japanese robots cartoon like mazinger, voltron, golden warrior gold lightan…etc, and used to make lots of BB Gundams, so first thing came to me is to do a Gundam x Hollow Threat x Sketchbot mash up!

the long process has been documented, image heavy!(over 40 pics) so click here to see the entire W.I.P. :-)

1. Sketchbot landed in NZ, security PANDARA checking him out, make sure he is unarmed, all he got is a pencil… *cleared*

2. sketched my idea and start marking central lines on him, make sure hes symmetrical…

3. making templates for his helmet

4. position and trace…

5. to ease the job, i decide to take it apart…

6. shit happens! one of arm joint snapped when i pull it :-(

7. more template making…

8. mark all head details…

9. sculpting with super sculpey! i did the whole helmet in one go, try to eliminate times of baking…

10. nerve wracking time! even though i did some research online first, even discussed with steve talkowski, first time baking vinyl was scary as hell…

11. so it didn’t melt down… phew~

12. but the joint part is made out of ABS plastic as i’ve been told, and it kinda distorted after bake, not a big deal…

13. move on to helmet details, again marking the center line, always a tricky job…

14. marking where the “gundam signature V shape thingy” is, according to google its called V-fin?!

15. sculpt his eyes and helmet detail…

16. add first layer of mouth!

17. mark down mouth details, and more templates…

18. continues to add/sculpt details…

19. almost done with sculpting, i decided not to add ears to it, and thicken the V-fins, sculpey is a ceramic type clay, unlike resin or vinyl, its less flexible and breakable, so i’ve to make the change and make sure the design is tough enough to ship oversea…

20. last bits to sculpt, adding more depth to some of the details, uh… i’ve come to know that my understanding of gundam is very limited when i write this W.I.P, what do you call that thing above V-fin?!

21. sculpt part is done, having a little fun with it, put it back together(sort of) and see if it looks right! i was afraid i might break the other arm, so i’ll just hold it in position :P

22. fixing the melted joint, drilling bigger hole…

23. my first attempt to fix the broken arm, fill the gap with card boards + super glue + screw to hold the two pieces….

24. FAILED! looked fine at first, but after few arm rotate exercise it snapped again! :-(

25. masking the parts, prepare for airbrushing…

26. head painted white!

27. painting red…

28. yellow!

29. black! (JB at back also been painted at same time, multitasking!! hehe…)

30. prepare to airbrushing the protection coats…

31. two layers of protection coats down, let it air dry….(ice cream box & chopsticks are so handy!)

32. back to problem solving! drilled bigger hole to remove the stuffed joint…

33. when i was about to give up and glue the arm on the body, dad came with a solution, a cap from old medicine container, its soft plastic and fits the arm perfectly!!

34. drill & extend the hole to fit his new joint!

35. my message to the future new owner…

36. adding medical-grade adhesive plaster on the new joint to avoid his arm from slip out…. hehe, a complete medical treatment here!

37. operation complete! signed :-)

38. Hollow Threat Gundam-Bot comes alive! during the making of custom sketchbot, a lot of new gundam ideas came up, hopefully i’ll get to do another hollow threat x gundam theme custom again! (commission anyone?!)

okay! this has to be the longest blog post ever! maybe i should contact guinness world record or something? anyways, thanks for reading <3
