Sushi Inu W.I.P – Part 2
November 4th, 2014continuing from Sushi Inu W.I.P – part 1, now that we have the master sculpt done, its time to get messy with chemicals…
preparing the mold base with klean klay…
building legos wall…
pouring silicone, this is 2nd part of the 2-part mold…
completed silicone molds! ran into problem casting the ears, fail rate was too high, and i have to remake the molds for the ears…
casting Sushi Inu(s), it’s a war zone…
limited numbers of Sushi Inu blanks were made, hundreds of parts, countless hours of touch up and sanding… think back now, it seems like a bad decision to create this figure in separate parts?!
first layer of the gradient…
second layer of gradient, this is the main reason for separate parts, more control over the coloring…
giving the sushi a little bit of flavor…
face painted!
…and the back
seaweed wrapped, all parts painted, ready to put them all together!
super glued, they are not articulate-able, well…theres no point to have articulation for such short little legs anyway :P
sealed with layers of protection coats and the Sushi Inu was born! most time consuming piece i’ve done to date, only 10 were made, 5 of them will be on my online shop from Friday 7 November, 3pm EST/12 noon PST/8pm London time.
the other 5 will be available at DesignerCon this weekend, booth 203 (Good Awful), be sure to check out some of NZ’s lowbrow art showcasing at booth 203’s Tiny Travelling Gallery(such a rad mobile gallery/suitcase!), plus Good Awful’s debut resin creations, it’s gonna be a very “yummy” booth! :-)
Sushi Inu W.I.P – Part 1
October 29th, 2014hello! its been awhile, i’ve been busy with the family and preparing for some DCon releases, Sushi Inu is a completely new toy design based on one of my Sushi Kaiju drawing, and most challenging piece i’ve made so far(technically), anyways, this is how it was made… starting with sketch and foil skeleton…
briefly warped up with super suclpey
with some help from the back of a marker pen, i was able to press the holes in even size…or close enough, these are for the legs!
shaped the seaweed warp…
preparing paper stencils…
mark the guides…
this is guide for the ear join areas…
carve back in for the ear joins
sculpt the eyes and mouth…
his little butt and tail
now that features are done, time to fill in with sushi rice…
Sushi Inu’s body complete!
moving on to his parts! for the ears, i drew the ear guide with sharpie on a piece of baking paper…
sculpt onto the baking paper that warps around the sushi, so that it maintain the shape and not stick onto the surface…
sharpie marked guide will transfer onto oil based sculpey surface, very helpful for me to continue shaping the ear part…
last part of the sculpt, four little legs! and Sushi Inu is ready for the mold… TO BE CONTINUED :)
