Sushi Kaiju – W.I.P Part 1

here comes my next resin toy – Sushi “Punk” Kaiju(壽司怪獣), a new eastern addition to my Hollow Threat world! he’s a mutant creature formed by waste sushi, seafood and chemicals dumped into the ocean, kinda like teenage mutant ninja turtles from sewer?! sushi kaiju has yet to meet his master splinter, he can’t fight kung fu, but he will slap your face with tentacles when he sees you wasting seafood! :P

i’ve kaiju on my mind ever since i got my airbrush, with a few kaiju ideas in my sketchbook, this is one that i thought i’d have most fun and good use of airbrush, but i’d have never thought it took me almost 5 months of making, this by far is the most detailed and time consuming figure i’ve done! you’ll see why below…..

1. step one, making the base shape with super sculpey “original”(soft and easy to do a large shaping), palm size, but for sushi this is an XXL, 3 bites…?

2. making paper templates and making marks…

3. making eyes, this time i’m experimenting with super sculpey “firm”(new in NZ), i like the non-translucent color, but not the hardness… :/

4. sculpting lips….a smiling sushi! :D

5. fun part begin! after some researches(eating countless sushi & observe rice) i still have no idea how they do the rice textures, so i just sculpt them one by one… yes this took me days! @@above: rice sculpt in progress!
bottom
: complete! (somehow i feel like orio at this stage)

6. adding tooth & tongue… front side is pretty much done!

7. move on to the back side, making his ass template, drew a few asses in various size and width, you won’t see me use a compasses often, but i’ll do whatever it takes to make a perfect ass!

8. 3D ass! is this sexy or what?!

9. more rice textures…

10. thought the most challenging part is over, i try to speed up a bit on the sushi nori(seaweed), turns out this simple wrap gave me the biggest headache of the process! it cracks when i bake it, tried fill gap, dig bigger hole and refill, it cracks over and over again, 4 times!! at the end, i called my supplier TOPMARK, they were really helpful, look up books and try to find possible cause of the crack, and the problem being me rushed it, this clay needs to work though properly, that means rub it over and over, soften it, give it a good massage, make your clay happy & she’ll do you right in return…. i’m not kidding!!

11. leg base, bake and harden it…

12. another layer on top, i find this easier to sculpt textures without ruined the overall shape…

13. adding his little feet…

14. measuring foot size! i’m a shoe maker ;-)

15. making foil template for the geta(japanese sandals)…

16. base of geta…

ok, this is awfully long, stay tuned for part 2 of WIP coming very soon :-)
